The greening of renovations
This month’s Metropolitan Home has an excellent primer on deciphering between all the information relating to an eco-conscious renovation. A few things that stood out to blinkdecor:
- Consider the traveling distance of materials: when choosing between wood or bamboo flooring, one expert decided to opt for certified wood because most bamboo is imported from China using a tremendous amount of energy in transport.
- The Met Home experts also discuss indoor air quality and the elimination of volatile compounds in the air. They recommend eliminating carpet because it picks up dirt. Even better - take your shoes off at the entrance, as the Japanese do, and leave the outdoor toxins at the door.
- Size matters, in that it costs twice as much in dollars and fuel to heat a 10,000 square foot home than a 5000 thousand sq. ft. home. So when asked how to make a 14000 ft. home greener one said to cut off the second floor.
- In terms of saving water, they suggest installing high-efficiency toilets like a dual flush toilet.
- Remember to properly seal off your renovation with proper seals at doors and windows. If you do make the house more air tight it needs to be properly ventilated to let indoor air pollutants get out.
- Recycled denim as installation! Although almost twice the price (originally) as fiberglass insulation people claim it really keeps rooms warmer.
All in all, a Green renovation is about making sound choices that fit your personal needs and budget. It all comes down to prioritizing.
