Congratulations on your continued success bringing mod style to the masses!
We are in awe of your website, jonathanadler.com, as it so vividly reflects the passion, personality and panache of your in store collection.
Thank you for sharing your inspirational thoughts with blinkdecor on how to shop online in the comfort of your own happy home...
BLINKDECOR: What are your secrets for capturing the charisma of your collection online?
JONATHAN ADLER: In my design work I strive to create products that are really well-crafted and chic but with a little tidgy widgy bit of cheekiness. I love my job, I think design should be fun and uplifting, and I hope it shows in my work. When designing our website I wanted to create something chic and gorgeous and navigable (most importantly!) and user-friendly and true to my vision. We try to be really straightforward with the web and strip away any bells and whistles. I loathe flash websites which take time to load and have music and intros. Loathe. So, we keep it visually simple and straightforward and producty and add little whispers of cheekiness via my manifesto and timeline and text.
BLINKDECOR: Do you recall the first “important” home furnishings purchase you made online?
JONATHAN ADLER: There have been so many! I suppose my first biggie was a giant Bjorn Wiinblad sculpture from eBay.
BLINKDECOR: What’s the biggest bonus for shopping online- time saved, multi-tasking opportunity, pressure-free browsing, or the freedom to dress as you like?
JONATHAN ADLER: The biggest bonus is that it doesn't feel like you're actually spending money! It all seems so virtual and free.
BLINKDECOR: Are you equally comfortable buying vintage and modern on the web?
JONATHAN ADLER: I buy anything and everything on the web.
BLINKDECOR: We are huge advocates of tapping into the expertise of boutique owners for design advice. Any suggestions if the owner isn’t in (perhaps at the potter’s wheel?) What makes you comfortable making an online purchase?
JONATHAN ADLER: I look for two things. First of all, I want to be able to really see what I'm buying. I want to be able to zoom in so close I can taste it and see different views and really understand it. The second thing is that I want to be able to talk to an actual person. Our
website has a great customer service staff. If you're nervous making your first purchase online, just give a call and they'll help you with anything you need, even "over the phone design consultations". We have customers all the time who want to know how a rug will look with their couch, or where's the best place to put a vase they really love. Great customer service is always the best answer.
BLINKDECOR: What would you never risk purchasing online?
JONATHAN ADLER: Nothing.
BLINKDECOR: Music to our ears! Jonathan, thank you!
