“Couture” chairs from Kartell

We love all the new versions of Philippe Starck’s Mademoiselle chair, “dressed” by some of today’s most stylish fashion designers. From Missoni’s playful cotton stripes, to Dolce & Gabbana’s silk leopard print, to Burberry’s classic plaid, these fabrics cleverly customize the chair’s mod transparent frame.

More Storage needed!

If you are like me, you’ve have been purging clutter for weeks in preparation for Santa’s visit. It really makes you wonder why we accumulate all this stuff. I must admit, this year I am making a concerted effort to reign in on my materialistic tendencies. After all, my children seem to only want the latest piece of junk they view on tv and then it is out of mind. Having said all this, I have been looking at some hip storage options for my family room. Hive Modern seems to have many contemporary options that seem to be in the same price range as say a Barbie Dream House. Go figure.

Mid Century Monday - Lost City Arts

Click to view related posts: Lighting, mid-century classics, mid century modern

Lost City Arts, established in Manhattan in the early 80’s, continues to unveil cool mid century finds from around the globe. One of our favorite things about their website is the Designer Bio page, profiling some of the most influential mid century designers, such as Harvey Probber, Edward Wormley, Verner Paton, Arne Jacobsen to name just a few.

Their lighting collection is eclectic and grand, and includes such finds a such as the Large Brass Wagon Wheel style chandelier, Swiss Louvered Floorlamp, and Striped Pendant by Massimo Vignelli for Venini.

In addition to their vintage originals, Lost City Arts offers new productions with mid century attitude. The Chaise Lounge, styled after a classic Robbsjohn Gibbings piece, is a fabulous new chaise that can be upholstered to customers specifications. Another great addition to their custom collection is the ILUM Lounge Chair, an over-scale, comfy club chair, upholstered in leather.

Tootsie Pop Art

If you are looking for something that says, “Pop” for the art officionado on your holiday list, artist Todd Lim has eye popping giclee prints and limited edition posters. The Pop Art movement coincided with the youth and pop music phenomenon of the 1950s and ’60s, and became very much a part of the image of fashionable, ’swinging’ London. Peter Blake, for example, designed album covers for Elvis Presley and the Beatles. In the U.S., Warhol was immortalizing Marilyn Monroe. Warhol, took every day ordinary grocery store items and created art from them. Using Tootsie Pop wrappers and marshmallow Fluff labels, many of Todd Lim’s art have a childlike reverence about them appealing to young and old.
